Master copies

I believe that copying other painters seems to you a little theft or even a dishonest trick. But relax, the world’s greatest painters copied others, thus trying to analyze their technique, skill and penetrate into their painting process. So it’s normal, and it would be unfair if I tried to sell such a copy. But that doesn’t happen. Master copy is a great exercise, learning, part of growing up as a painter. These pictures were taken in 2024 and 2025.

Small studies

Small studies are a very important exercise when learning to simplify landscapes. As it is clear that you cannot do details on a small format, the format forces you to simplify the scene.

Another element of painting those studies is that you work with a wide brush in a small area, which forces you to make rougher and clearer strokes, with less blending (coating).

The third value of those thumbnails is that, if you use the thumbnail as a template for a larger image, you can immediately determine the tonal values, colors, and overall design of the image.

So, if you want to learn a lot in a short time (you can even limit yourself to working on one miniature), do small studies. A one-inch brush, some acrylic paint, and you’ll quickly understand how a brush has a variety of edges and how you can develop brush control skills.
